Organizing & Cleaning Your Refrigerator

Did you know that the experts say that we should be cleaning out our refrigerator weekly and do a deep cleaning every 3-4 months? Cleaning your refrigerator is one of those jobs that can make all the difference in food safety and the smell of your home.

Imagine if you never cleaned your refrigerator and the smells in it started building. Every time you open the fridge door, that smell escapes into your home’s air and lingers there. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need the smell of bad peppers blending with the air that I breathe in everyday!

There are lots of ways to stay ahead of keeping your fridge clean and fresh. It all starts with a little preparation and organization.

Tips & Tricks to a Cleaner, More Organized Refrigerator

1. Do a weekly sort and toss

Get rid of anything that has gone bad, leftovers you’re not going to eat, or condiments that are past the expiration date. With those gone and out of the way, it frees up space right away!

2. Wipe up spills right away

The longer they sit, the funkier they get. Clean them up asap to avoid having the spill seep into other items and shelves.

3. Know your fridge zones

The top of the refrigerator and the doors tend to be warmer areas, so store items that don’t need to be quite as cold there. Crisper type items should always be stored lower because that is the cooler part of the refrigerator.

**Keep in mind that each fridge is different and with so many different refrigerator options now – freezer on the top, freezer on the bottom, freezer on one side, etc. – this may vary and you may need to test each area out to see which is coldest in your particular style.

4. Keep the healthy snacks near the front

What I like to do is keep the healthier snacks near the front and low enough that the kids can reach them easily. I always hope that that may encourage them to choose the healthier option rather than the sugary one!

5. Cut veggies up and store in a mason jar

If they are all ready and just sitting there ready to eat, hopefully, your kids will gravitate towards them!

6. Use organizers

Add organizers to the inside of your fridge and put all of your jars in them. That way if there is a spill it will be contained to the organizer rather than spilling all over the entire shelf.

7. Use food storage containers

Make sure that all of your food storage containers are the same size and/or stackable. This alone will give you a ton more space in your refrigerator. If you want to take it to the next level you can even get out your labeller and label each container so that you know what’s in it at a glance.
